Please join AT&T in celebrating the Day of the Dead at the Detroit Science Center on Sunday November 1st. The museum will celebrate this special holiday in conjunction with The Accidental Mummies of Guanajuato exhibition.
Day of the Dead is a holiday dating back 3,000 years to Aztec and other Central American societies. It is a time to celebrate and remember family and friends who are deceased. The Detroit Science Center will celebrate Day of the Dead with special performances by Mariachi Fiesta Alegre at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., craft activities throughout the day, piƱatas and treat bags for all children visiting the museum. Visitors in costume will receive $3 off adult museum admission or $2 off child museum admission. Make sure to stop by the AT&T Mobile Photo Unit to have your picture taken and to win awesome AT&T prizes!
The Accidental Mummies of Guanajuato is an all-new touring exhibition that debuted at the Detroit Science Center on Oct. 10, 2009. Featuring 36 accidental mummies on loan from the Museo de las Momias de Guanajuato, the exhibition combines science, history and cultural anthropology to immerse the visitor in the world of a Mexican city over 100 years ago where deceased residents naturally mummified in their crypts. This is the very first time these mummies have been seen outside of Mexico.
Visitors to the exhibition will meet some of these accidental mummies, learn about life in their thriving community, discover the modern-day forensic technology that helps scientists analyze them, and explore a culture that reveres and celebrates them. Each mummy tells his or her own story, with facial reconstructions completed by a forensic artist to give insight into their lives.
Tickets are $24.95 for adults, $22.95 for seniors (60+) and $19.95 for children (2-12). They are available at www.detroitsciencecenter.org, www.accidentalmummies.com and www.museumtix.com. Museum admission is complimentary with an exhibition ticket. The exhibition will be in Detroit through April 11, 2010. For further information, including an interactive tour of the exhibition, please visit accidentalmummies.com.
What an excellent display of Mexican culture and history. We really enjoyed our visit and recommend to everyone. Hope to see the exhibit again at our very own Museo del Barrio in New York City.
